MedPAN training on restoration - Application

MedPAN, the network of Marine Protected Area managers in the Mediterranean and IUCN Med offers a training course on Developing and implementing restoration activites in Marine Protected Areas. This training is intended for MPA management bodies, NGOs with a mandate to co-manage an MPA and national or local MPA authorities.

A session of the training is planned for November 2025.

The training is designed in a hybrid format, combining distance learning and face-to-face sessions:

  • October 2025 | distance learning phase: This preliminary phase of the training (combining self-directed learning and four 120-minute supervised online sessions) will provide participants with an initial theoretical grounding in restoration. The dates and schedules of the 4 online sessions will be communicated later.
  • First week of November 2025, Cabo de Gata, Spain | face-to-face session: This 4-day face-to-face session will enable participants to develop practical skills to implement their own restoration activities.

The training is open to a maximum of two participants from each MPA: The training targets the staff member(s) who will develop and implement the MPA's restoration activities, which may be either the MPA manager alone, or a pairing of the manager with a scientific profile (or any other relevant profile). In the case of co-management organisations, it is appropriate that they are accompanied by a representative of the public authority responsible for MPAs.

To help you as you complete the survey, here are some key definitions:

  • Restoration: The process of aiding the recovery of degraded ecosystems to restore their health and functionality.

  • Restoration of Species: Targeted efforts to help endangered or declining species recover.

  • Restoration of Habitats: The recovery of vital ecosystems like seagrass meadows and coral reefs.

  • Active Restoration: Direct human interventions, such as transplanting corals or replanting seagrass, to accelerate ecosystem recovery.

  • Passive Restoration: Allowing natural regeneration by reducing human stressors, often taking longer but requiring fewer resources.

This form allows you to apply for one or two participants. Please register your application as soon as possible by Sunday 24 August 23:59 CET at the latest. If needed, you will be able to access the form again after submitting your application to complete or modify your answers.

Participation costs: There is no registration fee for this course, and travel, accommodation and meal expenses, as well as logistics arrangements will be covered by MedPAN and IUCN Med.
